Description
A closer look into a sunflower's beautiful flower head. The florets inside the circular head are called disc florets, which mature into seeds. One sunflower can have up to 2,000 seeds!!
And to get really complicated, a mathematician, H. Vogel, has spent a lot of time out in the sunflower fields studying the head of a sunflower. Vogel came up with a model for the pattern of florets by calculating the radius, distance, angles and the number of florets. Factor in the polar coordinates, golden ratio, the Fermat's spiral and some Fibonacci numbers and you got the mathematical model that has been used to produce computer graphics representations of sunflowers. Pretty cool, eh?
