Description
Hand-painted wooden nesting doll that so symbolizes Russia is one of the most popular souvenirs. They were everywhere!! The nesting doll is a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside the other. The dolls often follow a theme, aside from the typical traditional peasant girls, the themes vary, from fairy tale characters to Soviet leaders. I love the traditional ones best.
The story of Matreshka . . . once upon a time, there lived an artist. He was a lonely man, so he decided to make a daughter for himself - a wooden doll. He called her Matrena Matreshka. So, they started to live together. Then Matreshka said "you have me and I don't have anyone, make a daughter for me." Well, the artist agreed and made her a daughter and called her Treshka. So now there were three of them. And then, Treshka said "Dear artist, you have Matreshka, she has me, but I don't have anyone. Please make me a daughter as well." The artist created another doll named Shka. When Shka asked for a daughter, the artist became very angry and said "I will make a son for you and he will never ask for a daughter."
