Description
Kizhi is one of Russia's most picturesque religious destinations. It features a beautiful ensemble of 87 intricate wooden churches, chapels, and cottages. These structures on Kizhi Island date from various centuries (the oldest from the 14th century).
Also on this island is a reconstructed village which demonstrates traditional crafts and tasks of peasant life in the Karelia Region of Northern Russia. Villages original to the island also exist, and some houses are still inhabited by locals.
The island is situated in Lake Onega, one of the largest lakes in Europe spanning 10,000 sq. kilometer area (3,861 sq. miles). It is near the Finnish border in the northwestern part of Russia -- northeast of St Petersburg. The lake contains over 1,300 islands, most of which lie in the north. The most famous of the islands Kizhi - has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
